HOMEWORK #8 Self-Portrait

Make a self-portrait in your medium of choice on 18 x 24 in. paper. Try to be more conceptual with this drawing rather than making a traditional portrait.  Use props or place yourself in a space, etc. The drawing above is a commentary on "Aging." It is a play on "Mirror, Mirror, on the wall . . ." The real strength of the drawing conceptually speaking is not in the portrait but rather in the bandaged hand holding the mirror.  Very evocative drawing.

HOMEWORK #8 Division of Field

Make a drawing employing the divisional strategies explored in class.  Your subject may be anything from a room or outdoor space to the surface arrangement of objects on a table. Consider the movement or functionality of the space.  Think about how one would enter the space and where he or she would be directed. Also remember that we read left to right; consider the affects of this on your composition. Note in the drawing above that we enter at the bottom left corner, move towards the garbage can and  are then directed through the doorway and up the stairs. Paper size 18 x 24 in., any medium.

HOMEWORK #8 Color

Choose three small objects and make a drawing using a color scheme that complements the subjects in mood and/or function. Pay attention to compositional balance, positive and negative relationships and eye level. Remember when dealing with color to consider the value as well as hue.  Furthermore, you will get a richer and more luminous drawing when you layer colors rather than just filling in (ex. using orange to render an orange (fruit) would be somewhat dull and flat whereas layering in some red, yellow, white and possibly blue or green would be striking and more volumetric). In the drawing above note the use of blues and greens within the shadows of the yellow bottle and the combining of primary colors within the metal snips.
