PROPORTIONS

The concept of proportions can be an aesthetic judgement as in the case of drawing cartoons vs. realism. Cartoons exhibiting exaggerated or distorted proportions while realistic imagery expressing a more objective approach. When "objectivity" and accuracy are the goals it is important to consider the relative sizes of all the parts that make the "whole." The drawing above is based on the "organizing" and "measuring" technique of Alberto Giacometti.

1. Start with a vertical axis line when dealing with symmetrical objects.
2. Draw "root" forms spheres, cylinders, cones etc.
3. Take measurement and compare width and height of the objects to themselves and the objects next to them. (Note the horizontal lines extending across the page from the bases and tops of objects in the drawing above.)
4. Remember to pay attention to negative areas between objects but also within handles and around spouts.
