Using India ink, draw a self-portrait from life (i.e. look in a mirror, not a photo). Pay attention to the "Rule of Thirds." You may sketch the drawing in pencil first. When adding value pay close attention to the planes and cross-contours of the face. Consider the difference between rendering light and rendering volume. Notice the direction of the marks in the drawing above. In general, they are addressing the light by employing a diagonal hatch across the shadow side of the face. Volume is addressed in contour lines and dark and light values in the "peaks and valleys" on the topography of the face.
